XXIV GIFF NATIONAL SCREENPLAY COMPETITION FOR SHORT AND/OR FEATURE FILM FICTION.

In order to stimulate the creation of screenplays that contribute to the strengthening of the National film industry, the GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF GUANAJUATO, the EXPRESIÓN EN CORTO AC FOUNDATION, ESCRIBE CINE AC, CORPORACIÓN CINEFILIA, WABI ENTERTAINMENT and the MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY announce the XXIV GIFF NATIONAL SCREENPLAY COMPETITION FOR SHORT AND/OR FEATURE FILM FICTION , with the following RULES :

1.- Registration opens on Tuesday, March 17 , the date of publication of this call, and closes at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 of this year.

2. Mexican authors or co-authors may participate, even if they reside abroad; naturalized foreign authors or co-authors; and foreign authors or co-authors residing in Mexico. All participants must be over 18 years of age.

3. Mexican authors or co-authors must attach a copy of a valid official photo ID with signature (INE or passport). Naturalized foreigners must attach a copy of their naturalization certificate. Foreigners residing in Mexico must attach a valid immigration document proving their permanent resident status.

NOTE: If the project is registered as a co-authorship, each member must submit the aforementioned personal documentation. Furthermore, the registration with INDAUTOR or WGA must include the names of all authors collaborating on the registration.

4. Screenplays must be original, unpublished, and not previously filmed. They must be written in Spanish and submitted with a cover page that includes only the title of the work and the registration number with INDAUTOR or WGA. No images or personal information should be included on the cover page or in the body of the screenplay, in order to maintain the anonymity of the author and ensure the impartiality of the evaluation process.

A screenplay or script is understood to be the plot developed through the description of places, characters, dialogues and stage directions that serve as the basis for the production of an audiovisual work.

The established categories and durations are:

Feature film: minimum duration of 85 minutes and maximum of 120 minutes .

Short film: minimum duration of 1 minute and maximum of 10 minutes .

5.- Formato del guion: La obra deberá estar escrita en formato profesional de guion cinematográfico, utilizando tipografía Courier o Courier New, tamaño 12, con interlineado sencillo. No se deben incluir indicaciones técnicas sobre la realización de la obra ni sobre el uso de cámara, ya que estas corresponden al guion técnico. Solo se aceptarán anotaciones técnicas en casos excepcionales, si son indispensables para la comprensión de la escena.

6.- La extensión en número de cuartillas deberá corresponder a la duración mínima y máxima de LARGOMETRAJE y/o CORTOMETRAJE (una cuartilla de guion equivale a un minuto en pantalla, aproximadamente). Guiones que no cumplan con el formato o sobrepasen el número de páginas serán automáticamente descalificados.

La portada no cuenta dentro del límite de duración establecido para cada categoría.

7.- Temática: Los participantes tendrán absoluta e irrestricta libertad de expresión y el tema será libre.

8.- Se dará prioridad a aquellas obras que consideren las posibilidades actuales de producción de la Industria cinematográfica mexicana, sin demérito de su calidad, y que contribuyan a elevar el nivel de nuestra cinematografía y cultura.

9.- Registro de derechos de autor: Todas las obras deberán estar registradas ante el Instituto Nacional del Derecho de Autor (INDAUTOR) o WGA. Para efectos de esta convocatoria, el certificado de registro de obra deberá tener una fecha de expedición no mayor a cinco (5) años a partir de la fecha de publicación de las presentes bases.

Es obligatorio que cada participante adjunte en formato PDF, copia del certificado oficial de registro de obra en el Formulario de Registro en Línea. No se aceptarán fichas de trámite, constancias de solicitud, comprobantes de pago, ni documentos provisionales.

10.- En caso de que el concursante utilice como base del guion una novela, cuento, otro género literario o algún texto de otro autor, el concursante deberá incluir en el Formato de Registro en Línea copia del documento que acredite la autorización del autor o titular de los derechos, el contrato de cesión de derechos de adaptación correspondiente o, en su caso, el documento que compruebe que la obra pertenece al dominio público.

11.- Límite de guiones: Cada autor(a) podrá presentar el número de guiones que desee.

12.- Registro: Cada participante deberá completar el Formato de Registro en Línea – Concurso de Guion GIFF y adjuntar su guion en formato PDF con una portada que incluya únicamente el título de la obra y el número de registro ante INDAUTOR, en la página web: www.giff.mx . Archivos descargables o en otro formato, no serán tomados en cuenta. No se aceptarán guiones por otros medios ni extemporáneos.

13.- Cuota de Inscripción:

Short Film Scripts: 15 dollars (fifteen USD)

Feature Film Screenplays: 30 dollars (thirty USD)

14.- Participation in previous editions: Scripts that are found to have participated in previous editions, even if they have gone through a rewriting process, will not be considered for evaluation.

15.- Jury and evaluation: The works will be evaluated by a jury composed of outstanding screenwriters whose decision will be final.

16. The jury's decision will be communicated to the finalists via email a few days before the Festival. The winners will be announced during the Awards and Closing Ceremony of the Guanajuato International Film Festival, GIFF 2026.

17.- AWARDS

FEATURE FILM: Cash prize of $50,000.00 MXN and Script Doctoring (valued at 4,000 USD), plus direct entry to the 15th edition of LabGuion, *Terms and conditions apply.

SHORT FILM: Cash prize of $20,000.00 pesos

18.- The winners will retain all the rights established by the Federal Copyright Law.

19. Finalists: The jury will select up to five (5) finalists per category, who will be invited to participate in GIFF Industry activities, where they will have the opportunity to present their projects to producers, investors, and film funds, in addition to receiving accreditation as an author. Travel, lodging, and meal expenses will be the responsibility of the participant.

20. Any cases not covered by this call for entries will be resolved by the judging panel and the organizing institutions. The festival is not obligated to provide feedback on submitted projects or to make the jury's opinion public.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF PROJECTS: Thursday, April 16, at 2:00 p.m.

IMPORTANT: The convening institutions are not responsible for any saturation in the registration mechanism that may occur at the close of the call.
